13 ✴ the goddess number

✴ It’s Friday the 13th! ✴

what better time to discuss the number 13 and what it actually represents.

for as long as any of us can remember, the number 13 has represented a superstitious energy of bad luck and unfortunate events. some of us going as far as to avoid the number altogether. hospital operating rooms and airplane aisle seats going from twelve to fourteen to ease any uneasiness this number may bring up for the viewer.

but in the days before widespread monotheism and within goddess-worshipping cultures, the number 13 wasn’t viewed so fearfully. in fact, it was considered very lucky.

the egyptians believed the number 13 symbolized rebirth. the joyous afterlife that awaited them after this life. they didn’t view death in a morbid way- but rather as a divine and magical transformation.

in the major arcana of the tarot, the 13th card is the card of death. a card intended to be read as a sign of incoming change and an opportunity to release what no longer serves us. a transformation.

although it is one of the most feared cards in the deck, the death card holds the most power for positive change.

it’s an invitation to close one door so the next may open.

the old version of you needs to ‘die’ to allow the new you to be created.

the number 13 also commonly represents femininity and fertility. this is because we have 13 lunar (menstrual) cycles every year (13 x 28= 364 days). making 13 a number of creations and blood. death and rebirth.

as we collectively transitioned away from the lunar calendar and began to repress our innate feminine qualities, 13 went from being the number of the divine to the number of our demise.

free thinking divine feminine energy was labeled ‘witchcraft,’ leading to many healers being killed at the stake due to forced ignorance and a hatred for powerful female leaders.

we began to fear the pieces of ourselves we cut off.

the pieces we couldn’t
control.

emotions like sadness and anger became evil and dark. our tender side was taught to hide because it can’t possibly be reciprocated in a world so cold and mean.

taught to follow 12 steps, and always wondering why no matter what you do, you can’t help but always feel one step off.

before patriarchal times, friday the 13th was considered the day of the goddess. a day to worship the divine feminine that lives within us all and to honor the cycles of creation and destruction. a powerful day to manifest and celebrate the beauty of life, the wisdom of the journey, and the power of our creativity.

when the energy of 13 is introduced to friday (venus day), we are being reminded of the importance of resting, relaxing, and playing. an energy we’ll find ourselves naturally sinking into.

it reflects a time of spiritual enlightenment and development, with opportunities for discovery all around you.

13 is the reminder nothing needs to happen. everything is exactly as it should be. you hold the universe inside you. all life emerges from within. if you try to exert pressure for something to exist before it’s ready, that new life within you won’t have the time it needs to fully form.

if we allow what’s within us to emerge in divine timing, in kairos or soul time, then what’s within us will transform us. 13 is the trust that what is ours can never be taken from us, so there’s no need to answer the ego’s push to rush the process, to impress others, or to complete something on someone else’s timeline.

our process is sacred.

even in the midst of what may seem like chaos, or delay, or even death, there’s a tendril of new life that needs only our trust to eventually take form.

it is knowing that life begins again, after death, from within.

✴ soul affirmation: ✴

i hold the universe within me.

i am the force of an ever-expanding love.
